iFob as an icebreaker

Put iFob on your iPhone or iPod touch, and then walk into any hotspot and see who's there. Decide whom you might want to chat or even talk with. Play. Try to figure out who has the tagline: "Been here before." Change your tagline to read, "Questions or statements?" Get your interest piqued when you receive a chat message, "Questions", because you know the person who sent it has to be in the same coffee shop -- but you aren't sure yet just who they are... is it the odd looking person with weird hair and beat up laptop, or the calm looking one in the corner reading Art Forum and occasionally glancing at an iPhone... You get to decide: ignore the chat or respond. The odds are better than before that you won't be bored.

It's a party. It is real life.
We eventually learn:
  • No matter how big the living room, everyone still crams into the kitchen.
  • Corners are good places to stand if you want people to come and talk with you.
  • Anyone who introduces themselves with a resume of achievements should be avoided.
  • Online people are not the people in the kitchen.

Like to listen before you talk?
Set your iFob to be private, and it will not broadcast your tagline. You can then sit there drinking your tea and check out the iFobians who are broadcasting. Just like a real party, you can then chose to engage or not. Have fun with iFob.

Its Nuts, really, seeing everyone behind their screens, sharing space with strangers but not meeting.

Glance over people's shoulders and watch what they are doing on their PC's, mostly they are trying to connect with email, chat, and social network sites. But those connections are far away or a lie. With iFob, whomever shows up in your tagline list will be in the same room, close enough to exchange a smile.
